For those who have been wanting Dark theme in their MI Devices, here is a quick tour of how to do it. It requires a PC, adb tools and a Xiaomi device with the latest MIUI Global 10.3.3 update. This way is totally safe and does not Tamper with your data. Download adb tools for Windows, Mac or Linux.
Step 1. Go to the settings on your device and select “About phone” which appears on the top.
Step 2. Next, tap on “MIUI version” for 7 times until you see “Developer Options enabled”
Step 3. Now, go to “Additional settings” and then scroll down to “Developer Options”
Step 4. Make sure “Developer Options” are enabled
Step 5. Scroll down to “Debugging” section where “USB Debugging” as well as other options are available. Enable:
- USB debugging
- Install via USB
- USB debugging (Security settings)
This will help us pass specific commands to the device for enabling the Dark Theme.
Now, let’s move to the PC.
Open command prompt by pressing the Windows logo key + R
Type in cmd as shown in the picture below:
Browse to the directory where adb folder is saved. For example, I have saved it in C Drive so I just pathed my way to the folder.
[Note: cd(space).. is used to go back a directory and to select a directory, cd(space)directoryname is used.]
Type in “adb devices”
On your device, it will ask for permission
Click on “OK”
Then, it will display a number like this which means that your device is connected and we are heading the right way!
Next, just write the following commands to enable dark theme on your MIUI device:
For enabling Dark Theme automatically, based on the time of the day:
adb shell settings put secure ui_night_mode 0
For enabling Dark Theme (all the time):
adb shell settings put secure ui_night_mode 2
For disabling Dark Theme:
adb shell settings put secure ui_night_mode 1
Don’t worry if you can’t see the changes yet! Just restart your device and the changes will be visible! Dark theme is available on the beta version of the rom out for developers but with this simple method you can enable dark theme on your MI device easily. Since there is no visible “setting”, it is done through a command which acts as a simple on/off switch!
